Sandy Springs, Georgia

Sandy Springs is a city of roughly 106,000 people directly north of Atlanta, in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It incorporated in 2005 and is now one of Georgia’s largest cities, combining a dense commercial core around Perimeter Center with quiet residential streets a few minutes away in either direction. Two roads define daily life. Interstate 285, the Perimeter, cuts across the city, and Georgia State Route 400 runs north through it. Sandy Springs also holds one of the densest concentrations of medical care in Georgia. Northside Hospital Atlanta, Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite sit within a few blocks of one another on Peachtree Dunwoody Road, which means constant ambulance movement and a steady flow of visitors unfamiliar with the streets.

For green space, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area runs the western edge of the city with trails, kayaking and fishing. Morgan Falls Overlook Park sits above the dam on the river, and the Abernathy Greenway, Hammond Park and Big Trees Forest Preserve serve the neighbourhoods further in.

City Springs, the civic centre on Roswell Road, brought a performing arts theatre, restaurants and public plazas into the middle of the city, and Perimeter Mall anchors retail just across the line in Dunwoody. Public schools are run by Fulton County Schools, with Riverwood International Charter School and North Springs Charter High School the two main public high schools.

MARTA’s red line serves the city at the Medical Center, Sandy Springs and North Springs stations. Neighbouring communities include Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Roswell, Vinings and East Cobb.

The result is a city that behaves like two places at once. During business hours the Perimeter district carries the traffic of a small downtown, with office towers, three hospitals and a shopping centre inside the same few square miles. By evening the same streets serve neighbourhoods, school runs and the river parks. Most collisions here happen at the seam between those two patterns, where commuter speed meets local turning traffic on Roswell Road and at the ramps feeding GA-400.
