A personal injury claim is full of requirements, deadlines, and hurdles, but knowing what to expect can make a difference in how you feel about the process. One of the many aspects of your case may be a functional capacity evaluation or FCE.
What is an FCE Test?
An FCE is an evaluation ordered or requested by a physician, insurance adjuster, or attorney. The purpose is to assess your physical capabilities and identify limitations. It is a useful tool for showing how an injury has changed your abilities to perform the job you held before the accident or complete everyday tasks. These tests are often completed after a patient has already had some therapy or treatment to assess the progress.
FCE tests are often requested in personal injury cases because they provide a valuable picture of an injured person’s status post-accident. Additionally, the results can be used by a doctor or physical therapist to determine what services may be needed to aid in recovery following an injury. Your results may indicate you need additional physical therapy, workplace accommodations, mobility aids, or a whole host of other services or devices.
What do they do for an FCE test?
The FCE may take two or three hours; the full extent and length will vary depending on your injuries and capabilities. You will perform a series of exercises and activities designed to show the evaluator what you can and cannot do, including whether or not you can:
- Bend
- Squat
- Sit
- Stand
- Pull or push items
- Climb stairs
- Lift items
- Carry items
- Perform repetitive tasks
The FCE report will include details on recommendations and abilities, including some or all of the following:
- Your overall weaknesses and capabilities
- Your work and employment abilities
- Restrictions on work duties
- Recommendations on continued treatments
Tips for Completing the FCE
The FCE is intended to gauge your level of recovery and continued needs. It is in part used to help your healthcare provider meet you where you are in terms of recovery, but it is also a valuable tool in a personal injury case. If you are feeling nervous about your upcoming FCE, consider the following tips:
- Remember you are being observed as soon as you enter the office
- Make a good effort to complete the assessment
- Be honest – don’t try to minimize or make light of your pain
- Wear comfortable clothing that you can move in and keep on for hours
